I never even left!

Hey! I changed my icon. Do you like it? Me too.

For the last six years it was this dumb christmas hat I drew when I was 12. I think the only reason I stuck with it so long was because I wanted to be a brand. But now I just want to be a real human being, so I decided to go with something a little less faceless. On that note, I very briefly considered this guy:

2559389_141547390481_HatIconrevised2.jpg

And then I decided that was dumb too and I shouldn't have to be some slave to tradition so I gave up on the whole 'gradual change' thing and made a whole new man. Does that make this the start of a new era? I don't know and probably not.

I will admit there's been a real shift in tone over the last couple of years, though. When I was thirteen I always tried to be all professional and adult-sounding, but now I just want to be a real guy. Except for that whole "fuck you I'm the best" shtick. I'm still really into that. In fact, I'm starting to think it's not a bit and I'm actually a douche.

Speaking of which, do you remember a couple weeks ago when I was complaining about how all the good animators at my school all draw exactly the same way? Well just as an experiment, I entered this month's Eleven Second Club, a competition dominated by these Bluthers and Disneyboys. I got 24th, which is completely fucking retarded because it only got like 10 views during the voting period. I also lost to this.

Here's my entry by the way. I know it's not first place stuff, but I thought it was a lot better than all the samey shit in the top 20. On a positive note, it was really cool to just spend a shit ton of time polishing a few seconds of animation, 'cause up until this point I've never really had anything I'd consider to be my very best work. I'm pretty confident that that's the best I can do.

So what's next from the new n improved EmroxTV? Probably nothing for a long time. I do have this one cartoon that I was planning on doing last year and then I was planning on doing last winter and then I was planning on doing last summer and now I'm planning on doing next winter. For the record I've made zero progress on it, so it'll probably be out by late 2017. Remember when I could put out cartoons every month? I remember that. Those cartoons were shit by the way. At least compared to this new one.

Want to make my day? Ask me my opinion on something or someone. I'm a big fan of "discussions" so give it a shot!

FUCKING GOD DAMMIT I JUST WROTE ANOTHER HUGE NEWSPOST AND IT GOT ERASED BECAUSE I dragged an image into the image uploader and it made the screen go away and aw man. It was all about how tv is dumb now and needs fixing.

Here's the picture that broke everything. I was really happy with the post too I read over it and everything.

When I was a kid I used to draw all the time. It consistently looked like garbage but I knew that if I just kept drawing and kept studying how to draw books I would eventually be a great artist among the likes of Michaelangela and Leonardo "The Vinci" Da Vinci.

But god damn realism is boring as shit.

I think once I figured out being the best was gonna take a lot of hard work and years of making mistakes, I sorta gave up on drawing and started to focus on animation exclusively. Except now I've gotten to the point where I'm pretty good at animating and I really wish my drawing skills had kept up. I never really noticed this until I started looking into animation schools, where I was shocked to find NO ONE CARES IF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE IN ANIMATION.

OOPS

So I'm back to drawing poses and hands and the other dumb stuff you're supposed to know how to do out of high school. It's a real chore. It's a real bore and a real snore. Especially because before I could make all sorts of mistakes and it was okay 'cause I was just a dumb kid. But now I'm a slightly older and slightly dumber kid, and I'm expected to understand human anatomy and drapery and shit.

I think a lot of artists eventually hit a point where they get sick of improving their technical skill, and instead sorta go off to do their own little avant-garde thing instead. And sometimes it's really cool and interesting, but most of the time it just looks crummy and boring because they never quite finished learning their traditional-art skills. I never thought I'd fall into that group, but looking back at what I've made this last year, I think I'm already there.

So yeah I dunno I guess that means I'm gonna cool it on the weird shit for a while. Unless I really think I'm onto some revolutionary new technique, then I'll keep at it. But hey come on I'm like 10 years old, probably not gonna be the next Picasso any time soon.

It's my birthday today so usually I talk about everything I did over the last year but I didn't do anything so here's a picture I drew:

Hey cadets!

So this summer I was gonna try and finish a cartoon I haven't started yet. It's weird because I used to be able to just force myself to get to work, but it's almost like I'm so proud of this script, I can't get anything done on it 'cause I'm afraid I'll fuck it up. It's also been re-written maybe 20 times since 2012. And I've redesigned the characters twice, which is 200% more times than any other project.

I'm going to school in Canada now. If you write "eh" in the comments fuck you no one says that. Anyway, if you live anywhere near Oakville or Brampton ON, lemme know maybe we can do a thing. By the way I'm going to the WORLD RENOWNED #1 ANIMATION SCHOOL IN THE UNIVERSE Sheridan college. I'm going for game design.

anyway that's it stay tuned for a longer post in maybe a week

vv here are some of the characters I had to throw away. I still like them

Looking back through the works of some of the great n' recognized NG animators, I've noticed a pattern in terms of art/animation quality - they start as dumb kids, experiment & improve through their teen years, and then finalize their style in their early twenties. And I've always been REALLY worried that's gonna happen to me too.

All throughout my time on Newgrounds, I've pretty much come to hate everything I've made within six months, partially because the jokes get old, but also because I can see all the technical mistakes I've since grown out of. It sucks because it means I'm really self-conscious about my art, but it's also very reassuring 'cause it means I'm still improving. But looking back at my more recent cartoons, I'm still perfectly okay with them. As of right now, I still think my best-animated cartoon is "On the John" ( http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/624631 ), but I was 16 when I made that and I'm turning 18 in a couple of months. uh oh!

So for the last few days I've been tossing around this idea of "hitting the wall" in terms of artistic improvement. I mean I know my visual art skills aren't NEARLY as good as a real pro animation guy, but in terms of having an eye for motion and arcs and all that fluid-looking animation stuff, I'm pretty happy with where I am. And I thought I'd be safe for another three years!

Although, it's also true that I've been putting out less content. Maybe I just have to make something new. I dunno what do you kids think? I'm hoping I can come back to this post in a couple years and think "oh wow what an idiot you still have a shit ton to learn about cartoons," but only time will tell.

OH YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME I just wrote a big post and then it got deleted 'cause I accidentally hit the backspace button and then the page whent back and COME ON I thought we got this shit sorted out in 2005. I got a bedtime here!

Anyway, I made a game for the public domain jam, check it out:

http://itch.io/jam/the-public-domain-jam/rate/8015

And you can rate it! But be honest about it or they'll think I sent ya. I guess I did, though, so whatever man don't rate it.......!

I bet you forgot I could make games! Well I forgot too. How to make them, I mean. You can download the source code too, but don't actually look at the code 'cause it's shit. Hey kids some quick advice don't teach yourself how to code, 'cause I swear to god I've been doing this on and off for six years and I still don't know how to use a "for" loop. I also don't know what the little plus signs do.

I might put it on NG, too. Just as long as you guys think it's neat and not just some pretentious art game shit. (It's not supposed to mean anything, really! It's just supposed to feel "cool.")

Hey kids remember when I went on that big ol rant about why video game parodies are dumb n' hack? This is like the sequel.

I can't remember who said it or how long ago, but I think I remember some popular NG/YT animators saying it's okay to do video game/tv parodies for the views as long as you focus on original content once you get that initial surge in fans. (The 100k rule, I believe it's called.) Well whoever said that I'm sure was a liar and a hypocrite, because I haven't seen anyone follow through on that one.

And it really isn't their fault – it's tough to start from the bottom and work your way up without the aid of those guaranteed-to-be-viral pokemon/skyrim/minecraft videos. But what you have to remember is that if you're building your fanbase off of video game jokes, people subscribed to you for the video game jokes, not your original content. I think some people probably did get to 100,000 subs and tried to "switch," only to find zero people watching their cartoons once they dropped the parodies.

Here's the thing that really pisses me off though – even the hackiest dumbest pandering-est parody cartoons are promoted by all the other established animators. Are we seriously reinforcing the popularity of these dumb trends? You know you don't HAVE to share a shitty cartoon with everyone 'cause your "friend" made it. We gotta quit jerkin' eachother off and telling eachother it's okay to make all this hack shit. In fact, I'm gonna be the first to say DON'T watch any of these cartoons. I haven't seen most of 'em, but I have decided to judge them solely on the fact that they are parodies.

2559389_139758026113_hacks.png

And is this unfair of me? Totally. But I think if we want better quality content, we have to stop promoting videos that are designed to be popular. Or in this case, anti-promote. Don't watch parodies it hurts the internet.

Thanks!
